Understanding Comics is one of my favorite books, and oddly enough is required reading for user interface designers. I was fortunate enough to hear Scott McCloud speak. He's brilliant. I'm jazzed he has a new book in out -- I'll have to check out "Making Comics".
Yup, I read Understanding Comics in college. I bought it from the reserved copies for a class I wasn't taking (I was super bad back then), so some poor rhetoric student had to do without. Loved it.
