On scalability

Scalability seems to be a number one concern for many businesses lately. As it should be—the lead executive of an impressive CSR program told me years ago, "Success is easy... we only care about scalable success."

However, before developing a scalability strategy, I advise clients to get very clear about what it is they are trying to scale. Is it:
  • Impact
  • A service
  • A technology platform
  • An organization / network / community / market / tribe

The relevant best practices and gotchas in each case are very different.

    Something old, something borrowed

Axe is one of my favorite examples of a product whose primary differentiation is its message. Love it or hate it, Axe's "guys, wear this, you'll get lucky" marketing approach has created new growth in what was once considered a commodity category. Unilever is now laughing all the way to the bank.

It appears from this NYT article (as blogged in Good Experience) that Old Spice is about to jump on the same sex-not-efficacy bandwagon.

    May the best deodorant win.

I can think of two dozen companies who could make millions from this research. I just wish I had read the article before I ate a full pint of Ben & Jerry's last night. (NY Times)
